The First Britannias to Feature the Effigy of King Charles III!
It was nearly two thousand years ago when Britannia was born, courtesy of the Romans who imagined a noble, graceful warrior, and placed her on coins—signifying the new province they had claimed. After the fall of the Roman Empire, Britannia disappeared for hundreds of years—until the 17th century when England, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, extended its naval power and defeated a Spanish invasion. The combination of a strong female monarch and a growing national confidence resulted in Britannia’s revival, and her first appearance on British coinage in 1672.
That was over 350 years ago, and Britannia has been on British coinage ever since—the longest running coin series from the Royal Mint!
This year’s one-year-only design features a contemporary reimagining of Britannia by designer John Olliffe, showcasing Britannia’s maritime origins and her duty of protecting Britain’s shores. The design displays the iconic female figure standing bold on a chariot at sea, fittingly drawn by two aquatic serpent-like creatures, or “seahorses”. On her left she carries the trident, and on her right, a shield bearing the Great Britain flag.
Each coin’s obverse features the first definitive portrait of King Charles III by designer Martin Jennings. Jennings has designed many public sculptures in the U.K., and has sculpted great writers and poets including Charles Dickens.

As Proofs, these 2023 Britannia coins are struck to a much higher standard of beauty, quality, and craftsmanship than circulated coins. Proof planchets (blanks) are specially treated, hand-polished, and cleaned to ensure high-quality strikes, then hand-fed into presses fitted with specially polished dies and struck at least twice, unlike non-proofs which are struck only once. The extra strikes give proofs a glamorous shine and make intricate, razor-sharp details of the design pop off of brilliant fields. Reverse Proofs are reversed, with mirror-like raised elements and frosted backgrounds. While circulated coins are struck on high-speed presses by the thousands, these Britannia Proofs are individually struck by highly skilled artisans who are creating numismatic masterpieces.
These Britannia Proofs have all been certified by the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) as being in flawless Proof-70 (PF70) condition. They are also among the first of their denomination struck by the Royal Mint. They come NGC-certified with a First Struck designation ranging from One of First 5 Struck for the five-ounce Gold Britannia Proofs, to One of First 50 Struck for the one-ounce Silver Britannia Proofs.
Your coins will arrive with a Royal Mint numbered certificate of authenticity and in a Royal Mint branded presentation case. Each coin is encapsulated with an NGC-exclusive Britannia label, which includes the classic image of Britannia from the 1987 design and the British flag in the background.
To start with, mintages for these 2023 Britannia Proofs are insanely small—though the numbers don’t really mean much because the Britannia Proofs you have here are perfect, and every one is among the first coins off the press for each denomination, which makes the population for each coin significantly smaller than the actual mintage.
