A Quick Recap of the American Liberty Medals Program—Why You Should Care

American Liberty Medals are struck by the U.S. Mint to celebrate the ideals of freedom and liberty by honoring classic symbols of liberty in a modern way. What that means is that the program offers extraordinary designs that provide a fresh take on the depiction of American Liberty—in 99.99% pure gold or 99.9% fine silver—since the introduction in 2015.

A Stunning New Design

These proofs boast the fifth new design in the series, showcased in remarkable high relief with the elements rising sharply and dramatically off the surface of the proof. The spectacular obverse design by artist Elana Hagler, a member of the Artistic Infusion Program for the U.S. Mint as well as a Professor of Art at Alabama State University, features a bristlecone pine, a tree that is native to America and is thought to be one of the oldest living organisms on earth. The reverse, designed by U.S. Mint Medallic Artist John P. McGraw, depicts a young bald eagle standing on a rocky outcropping, moments before it takes flight.

Available in Pure Gold and Silver

With these 2023 American Liberty Proofs, you have your choice of coins and medals struck in one ounce of high-purity 99.99% gold ($100 Legal tender), or in one ounce of 99.9% fine silver. You also have several options for securing 2-Pc. Sets consisting of two silver medals or one gold coin and one silver medal, with your choice of designation and hand-signed label. More about that in a minute.

Proofs Like These, By Their Very Nature, Are Limited

Though technological advances have modernized and streamlined production of proofs, the extra time and effort required to produce them compared to non-proof pieces is a big reason why there are far fewer proofs minted each year than non-proofs. Actually, “far fewer” hardly tells the story. On a good day, proofs can be produced at a rate of 50 to 100 an hour. Bullion pieces, on the other hand, can be produced at up to 750 pieces per minute. Collectors love proofs because they’re the best of the best quality, and because of their relative scarcity.

Flawless, the Best of the Best

With medals and coins, quality is measured by grades on a 70-point scale, with a grade of 70 representing absolute perfection, even under magnification. It doesn’t get any better. With a new release, collectors quickly snatch up pieces and send them to leading independent grading services like Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC), hoping those pieces come back with a top grade of Proof-70 (PF70). That’s what you have here, the best of the best.

Not only that, but these Proofs have also been certified Ultra Cameo (UC), a designation given to pieces that possess an intense frosted finish on both sides, with highly polished fields accenting the raised elements. The number of proofs from a mintage that can be certified flawless and Ultra Cameo is tiny. There’s simply no better condition—and no grades are more coveted by collectors.

What’s Better than the Best?

These American Liberty Coins and Medals are not only perfect, they’ve also been certified with the sought-after First Day of Issue (FDI) designation—meaning these proofs were turned over for grading within 24 hours of release from the mint—or a First Releases (FR) designation—meaning these proofs have been received for grading within 30 days of release from the mint.

First Day of Issue and First Releases proofs are thought to have crisper strikes than those struck later, and because there are so few of them compared to the overall population.

BUT—There’s More!

Along with being the best of the best and the first of the best, each proof comes encapsulated with an exclusive NGC label featuring the hand-signed signature from either the renowned 12th Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint, John Mercanti, the man who has produced more coin and medal designs than any employee in U.S. Mint history; or David J. Ryder*, the former 34th and 39th Director of the U.S. Mint, who was named one of Coin World’s “Most Influential People in Numismatics”.

Very Limited Mintages

The U.S. Mint only authorized 12,500 Gold American Liberty Proofs and 75,000 Silver American Liberty Proofs for 2023. Those small mintages are likely to disappear quickly, especially considering that the last design in the series, which appeared on the 2021 Gold Coin (and 2022 Silver American Liberty Medals) propelled the high relief gold coin to be selected as the “Best Gold Coin” in Krause Publication’s Coin of the Year (COTY) competition, an annual award program that recognizes coins and medals worldwide for their excellence in design and craftsmanship.

You’ll be glad to have these flawless, perfect, gorgeous proofs as part of your collection. Take a look for yourself and see why!
