This new coin honors King Charles III ascending to the throne following the passing of his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, on September 8th 2022 at the age of 96. This is the FIRST Jody Clark rendition of King Charles III—which is a much-anticipated event due to Clark’s reputation as a designer and engraver, and his extensive history with the monarchy and British coins.
Jody Clark joined the British Royal Mint as an engraver in 2012, and has designed several renowned, career-defining commemorative pieces including the 2014 Britannia design, the Queen’s Beasts series and the fifth definitive Portrait of Queen Elizabeth II featured on British coinage. Jody designed this portrait of King George III exclusively for this program marking Charles III’s coming to reign. Charles III’s coronation is scheduled to take place on May 6th, 2023, at Westminster Abbey, where he will officially be crowned King. These stunning coins were struck at the Commonwealth Mint based in the U.K. where Jody currently serves as the Head of Design.
Clark’s portrait on the reverse of these coins features King Charles III traditionally facing left, opposite of Queen Elizabeth II’s official portraits; staying true to the tradition set by James II, where each monarch’s portrait faces the opposite direction of the previous.
Around the portrait is the legend “His Majesty King Charles III” along with the date September 8th, 2022—the date of the late Queen Elizabeth II’s passing, and the date the crown was passed to King Charles III. Note: the larger Kilo and 5-oz Gold coins will also feature a quote around the portrait “A life well lived; A promise with destiny kept”, quoted from Charles III’s first speech to the nation as king on September 9th, 2022.
The obverse of these coins features the Bank of Malta Coat of Arms. This coat of arms features two supporting Knights representing confidence and strength, the two virtues incorporated in the Bank of Malta’s motto. These symbolize some of the greatest pages in Malta’s military history, which for more than two-and-a-half centuries, was ruled by the Order of the Knights of St John of Jerusalem. On the shield is the George Cross, which was awarded to Malta for bravery in April 1942 by King George VI. Laurel and palm branches, symbols of honor and peace, support the mural crown at the top of the coat of arms. The banner at the bottom displays in Latin, the motto “Fiducia Fortis” – “In Confidence Strength,” and “1968”, the date of the Bank’s foundation.
Proofs like these are struck to a much higher standard of beauty, quality, and craftsmanship than circulated and uncirculated coins. Proof planchets (blanks) are specially treated, hand-polished, and cleaned to ensure high-quality strikes, then fed into presses fitted with specially polished dies, and struck at least twice, unlike regular coins which are struck only once. The extra strikes give proofs a glamorous shine and make intricate, razor-sharp details of the design pop against polished, mirror-like fields. While regular coins are struck on high-speed presses by the thousands, proofs are individually struck by highly skilled artisans focused on creating masterpieces. Collectors love proofs not only because they’re the best quality, but also because of their relative scarcity since proof mintages are typically only a fraction as large as non-proof coins.
You have your choice of coins struck in high-purity 99.99% pure gold in kilo, five-ounce, two-ounce and one-ounce sizes (€500, €100, €50 and €25 legal tender values respectively) and 99.9% fine silver in a two-ounce size (€3 legal tender).
Collectors seek out the best of the best for their collections, and that’s what you’ve got here. You can secure these King Charles III Proofs certified by NGC as in flawless Proof-70 (PF70) condition. Coins are graded on a 70-point scale, with a top 70 grade representing perfection, even under magnification. In addition to being flawless, your coins will arrive NGC-certified with a First Day of Issue (FDI) designation—which means these coins have been received for grading on or before the first day of release from the mint. First Day of Issue designations are sought-after because there are so few of them compared to the overall population.
Additionally, each coin will be encapsulated by NGC with exclusive Jody Clark hand-signed signature labels.
Authorized worldwide mintages for each of these Gold and Silver King Charles III Proofs are very limited. Only 10 kilo gold, only 30 five-ounce gold, only 60 two-ounce gold, only 200 one-ounce gold coins, and only 1,150 two-ounce silver coins, were authorized. Reducing the populations further, the proofs here are perfect, with a First Day of Issue designation and a hand-signed label.
