Since 1979, the Royal Canadian Mint’s beautiful Maple Leaf coins have grown steadily in popularity with collectors and buyers of high-purity bullion coins. With reverses featuring the iconic sugar maple leaf that has symbolized Canada and Canadians for nearly 300 years, Gold Maple Leafs were introduced in 1979 and Silver Maple Leafs in 1988. Struck in .999 fineness until 1982, the purity has been .9999% pure gold and silver ever since. The original, iconic maple leaf design was created by Walter Ott, an Austrian-trained master engraver and designer who began designing coins for Canada in 1952.
The Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) made history in 2018, striking the iconic Silver and Gold Maple Leaf series with incuse designs. The relief projecting inwards rather than outwards provided an extremely compelling effect that spurred many other major mints to strike modern incuse products of their own. As impressive as that was, the RCM was only scratching the surface of the capabilities. For 2021, the Mint debuted the world’s first-ever Super Incuse Gold and Silver Maples, where the incuse strike sank down 1.5 mm into the surface of the coin, creating a steep, canyon-like difference in depth they called “Super Incuse.” That’s 5 times deeper than the incuse strike seen on previous incuse maples—so deep in fact that even after the RCM switched to thicker planchets, the strike still nearly touches the center of the coin, stopping just shy at 40% of the coin’s total thickness.
For 2022, the Super Incuse Maple Leaf is not only back, it’s better than ever. In addition to the breathtaking level of depth that nearly reaches the center of the coin reverse, this second Super Incuse release includes selectively applied rose gold plating added to the super incuse maple element in the center of the design, both to the maple leaf itself and also along the steep, canyon-like sides sloping down to the maple. Further, the outer edge and rim of each coin have been completely plated. The color of the alloy creates an incredible contrast that gives both the pure silver and pure gold Proofs off-the-charts eye appeal.
In addition, these 2022 Maple Leaf Proofs feature a charming pattern of tiny maples radiating out from its center. Since these are reverse-proof coins, this pattern incorporates polished maples and frosted fields to provide a truly stunning contrast. Beyond that, this coin carries all the benefits of a traditional proof coin including multiple strikes for clean, sharp designs and frosted and polished finishes. The effect is always magnificent, but particularly when combined with the dramatic depth from a super incuse strike, and the exceptional field pattern.
These effects and their expert application combine to show Walter Ott’s iconic Maple leaf design like it has never been seen before.
The Canadian Maple Leaf is known around the world for its high purity, whether struck in gold or silver. That tradition continues with these 2022 Super Incuse Maple Leafs! You can secure one of these coins struck in two ounces of high-purity 99.99% pure gold, or struck in one ounce of 99.99% fine silver. Or you can select two-piece sets consisting of both coins.
