Here are two series that are among the most collected, and highly anticipated, annual issues for collectors around the world: China’s legal-tender Gold Pandas, first released in 1982, and China’s legal-tender Silver Pandas, first released the next year. And this year, for the FIRST TIME EVER, the coins in these series feature a special privy mark!
You see, 2022 represents the 40th anniversary of China’s famous Panda coin series. To commemorate this occasion, a special privy mark is being added to every Proof and Uncirculated Panda coin issued by the China Mint this year. The addition of privy marks will undoubtedly make this year’s coins even more collectible – and more desired!
These coins commemorate the rare Giant Panda, the national animal of China and the international symbol for the protection of endangered species. Giant pandas live in restricted areas of the high mountain bamboo forests of central China. Adults can weigh 200 to 300 pounds, and their diet consists almost entirely of bamboo shoots. Rare in the wild, Pandas breed poorly in captivity. They’re protected by law in China, and it’s estimated that only around 1,000 Giant Panda exist in the wild.
Minted exclusively at the Shenyang Mint, China’s oldest mint, in far fewer numbers than uncirculated coins, Panda Proofs are struck to a much higher standard of beauty, quality, and craftsmanship. Proof planchets (blanks) are specially treated, hand-polished, and cleaned to ensure high-quality strikes, then fed into presses fitted with specially polished dies and struck at least twice, unlike regular coins which are struck only once. The extra strikes give proofs a glamorous shine and make intricate, razor-sharp details of the design pop against polished, mirror-like fields. While regular Pandas are struck on high-speed presses by the thousands, Proof Pandas are individually struck by highly-skilled artisans who are creating numismatic masterpieces. Collectors love proofs because they’re the best quality, and also because of their relative scarcity compared to circulated and non-proof coins.
Each new year brings a new reverse design to the Gold and Silver Panda series. But starting in 2019, those designs became a “series within a series,” allowing collectors to see a panda cub grow into maturity. This year marks the fourth year of the China Mint’s new “cycle” of Panda designs.
This 2022 one-year-only reverse design depicts a pair of playful young Panda bears gleefully sliding down a snowy hill. It’s a scene that can’t help but bring a smile, designed by Huang Qin, renowned within the numismatic community for her numerous Chinese commemorative coin designs, one of which won a Coty (Coin of the Year) Award for “Best Gold Coin.” As always, the obverse depicts the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests in the Temple of Heaven (in Beijing) encircled by the phrase “People’s Republic of China” in Chinese completed with the year of issue, 2022. The Hall of Pray for Abundant Harvests has represented abundant harvests in Chinese culture for hundreds of years.
Adding privy marks to this series is extraordinary but the 40th anniversary of this famous China Panda coin series is a big deal. The privy mark makes this year’s Pandas stand out from other releases during the 39 years since the coin’s introduction, and will undoubtedly increase the appeal for collectors around the world.
Legal-tender Gold Pandas are available in 99.9% pure gold in a variety of weights (kilo, 150-grams, 100-grams and 50 grams). Silver Pandas struck in 99.9% fine silver are available in kilo and 150-gram weights. All Proof gold and silver Panda coinage are larger than their uncirculated versions (which top out at 30 gram sizes). The 150-gram and kilo sizes in particular, represent the largest gold and silver Panda-series coins issued by the China Mint each year. Their large diameter and impressive heft make them a unique showpiece in your Panda coin collection.
Collectors only want the best of the best for their collections, and so we’re offering these coins certified by NGC as flawless Proof-70 Ultra Cameo (PF70 UC) condition.
