2022 40th Anniversary China Gold and Silver Pandas Featuring the FIRST-EVER Privy Mark!

Here are two series that are among the most collected, and highly anticipated, annual issues for collectors around the world: China’s legal-tender Gold Pandas, first released in 1982, and China’s legal-tender Silver Pandas, first released the next year. And this year, for the FIRST TIME EVER, the coins in these series feature a special privy mark!

A Special FIRST-EVER 40th Anniversary Privy Mark

You see, 2022 represents the 40th anniversary of China’s famous Panda coin series. To commemorate this occasion, a special privy mark is being added to every Proof and Uncirculated Panda coin issued by the China Mint this year. The addition of privy marks will undoubtedly make this year’s coins even more collectible – and more desired!

Overwhelming Demand! Struck at Three Mints

For the past 20 years, there’s been no hotter coin market in the world than China. Why? Two reasons. First, in 2004 the Chinese government changed their laws to allow Chinese citizens to own precious metal coins. And second, the Chinese middle class has exploded, growing to a population larger than the entire U.S., all with the means and the hunger to acquire their national coins. As a result, there’s been an explosion in demand for Chinese coins – and China Pandas have led the charge. Want proof? Just for example, look at how the mintages for Silver Pandas have increased, averaging 149,000 coins minted during each of the first seven years (1989-1995), to 10,000,000 coins in 2017 and beyond. That’s an increase of 6,611%!

Why the Mint Matters?

Knowing a coin’s mint of origin allows you to understand just how scarce it really is. Here’s what legendary numismatist Jeff Garrett (former president of the American Numismatic Association and the expert the Smithsonian® turns to when they need advice on coins) said: “Collectors highly covet coins with low mintage figures. The simple initials or ‘mint mark’ designating where a coin was struck can add in some cases millions of dollars in value. One example is the 1927-D Double Eagle. The tiny ‘D’ mint mark on the 1927 Double Eagle increases the coin’s value from $2,000 to $2,000,000 because only a handful of coins survived from the Denver mintage versus tens of thousands from the Philadelphia mintage.”

This is not an isolated example. And it matters because collectors love being able to own coins struck at each mint. In this case, though the mints in China are very secretive about mintage figures, our contacts in China reported the production rates in recent years were Shenzhen-Guobao Mint 60% of the total mintage struck, Shenyang 25% struck, and Shanghai 15% struck. (And again this year.)

Solving the China Pandas Mint Dilemma

We’ve been trying to solve this issue for years. Though we made some headway in 2016, it wasn’t until 2019 that we were finally able to find a solution to the China Pandas mint dilemma. Ever since, we’ve been able to present our customers with coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), one of the world’s leading third-party grading services, as being struck at the Shenzhen-Guobao Mint (G), the Shanghai Mint (S) or the Shenyang Mint (Y), as well as full sets that contain coins struck at each facility!

You can own China Pandas from all three mints with the special privy mark—if you act fast.

New One-Year-Only Design—The “Series within a Series”

Each new year brings a new one-year-only reverse design to the Gold and Silver Panda series. But starting in 2019, those designs became a “series within a series,” allowing collectors to see a panda cub grow into maturity. This year marks the fourth year of the China Mint’s new “cycle” of Panda designs.

This 2022 one-year-only reverse design depicts a pair of playful young Panda bears gleefully sliding down a snowy hill. It’s a scene that can’t help but bring a smile, designed by Huang Qin, renowned within the numismatic community for her numerous Chinese commemorative coin designs, one of which won a Coty (Coin of the Year) Award for “Best Gold Coin.”

As always, the obverse depicts the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests in the Temple of Heaven (in Beijing) encircled by the phrase “People’s Republic of China” in Chinese completed with the year of issue, 2022.

Rare Privy Mark Commemorates the 40th Anniversary

Adding privy marks to this series is extraordinary but the 40th anniversary of this famous Panda coin series is a big deal. The privy mark will undoubtedly make these coins even more sought-after by collectors around the world.
