Why order this 2023 £1 St. Helena Boston Tea Party Proof Coin?
In 1773, the Sons of Liberty threw tea from the East India Company into Boston Harbor in protest of the British Parliament’s taxation on tea in what became known as the Boston Tea Party. The peaceful protest proved a seminal event leading up to the American Revolution, during which “No taxation without representation” became a rallying cry. 250 years later, the modern East India Company gives you the opportunity to mark the anniversary with this limited mintage legal tender silver coin that commemorates the occasion.
- This coin is £1 legal tender in St. Helena.
- This coin was struck from one Troy ounce of 99.9% fine silver.
- This piece is a product of the East India Company, which is represented by its “EIC” mint mark.
- The coin is part of a mintage of just 5,000 pieces.
- This coin was issued to mark the 250th anniversary of the Boston Tea Party.
Striking Tea Party Design by Joel Iskowitz
Obverse: Gracing the obverse is a left-side portrait of King Charles III. The monarch bears a reserved but resolute countenance. His effigy is encircled by inscriptions of his name and abbreviated Latin title, “CHARLES III D G REX F D,” the name of the issuing territory, “ST. HELENA,” the coin’s face value, “1 POUND,” and its date, “2023.”
Reverse: The reverse bears an exclusive Tea Party design by Joel Iskowitz. Protestors toss tea into the harbor from one ship with Boston and another ship in the background. Inscriptions along the rim note the name of the event commemorated, “THE BOSTON TEA PARTY,” and its date, “DECEMBER 16TH 1773.” Joel Iskowitz is an American book illustrator, coin and medal designer, and print and stamp artist.
