The United States Silver Peace Dollar was developed around the end of World War I to commemorate the peaceful atmosphere of America and the rest of the world at the time. The designer of this magnificent coin was famous Italian-American sculptor, Anthony de Francisci of Manhattan, New York. Francisci studied under some of the United States most prolific coin designers and sculptors of the era including Hermon MacNeil, James Earle Fraser, and Adolph Weinman. The obverse of the coin carries a beautiful rendition of Lady Liberty that was modeled after Francisci’s wife, Mary Teresa. Upon the head of Lady Liberty is a tiara of rays delicately placed upon her crown. The standard inscriptions of “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the date of minting are all placed on the obverse of the coin as well. On the reverse of the coin can be found a majestic American eagle resting on a mound as it faces the rising Sun in the east can be found. The denomination is displayed on the reverse, as well as the word “PEACE” and the regular mottoes of “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” Each coin is manufactured out of .77344 Troy oz. of pure silver content with an alloy composition consisting of .900 silver and .100 copper and an overall weight tolerance of 26.73 grams.
