A Historic Battle
Obverse: The tense scene illustrated on the obverse is inspired by the Great Siege of Malta that occurred in 1565, which is considered to be the most influential battle in the history of the island nation. A Maltese Knight on the left challenges a knight representing the Ottoman Empire as the conflict rages on land and sea in the background. Inscribed “KNIGHTS OF THE PAST” and “5 EURO.”
Reverse: The reverse is dominated by a medieval style circular shaped shield that is adorned with the emblem of the Order, a Maltese Cross, with the coat of arms of the Central Bank of Malta positioned at the center. A glimpse of the armor of the knight grasping the shield appears in the background. Inscriptions include “MALTA,” “2022,” and “1 OZ AG 999.9.”
