Why buy this Type I Intaglio Mint 2 oz Silver Round Gargoyle?
April 15, 2019 is one of those dates on which people will always remember where they were. Notre Dame de Paris, one of the treasures of Western Civilization, was engulfed in flames, although much of it was salvaged by brave firefighters. Some of the most fascinating features of the cathedral are its gargoyles. The grotesque figures serve the practical purpose of keeping water away from the walls, but they also represent the driving away of evil spirits. This first issue in Intaglio Mint’s Gargoyles of the World collection features one of the creatures from the cathedral. The round was struck from 2 oz of .999 fine silver and remains in Brilliant Uncirculated condition.
Stunning Gargoyle Design
The obverse features one of the gargoyles that sits on the exterior of Notre Dame. It is depicted in right-side profile looking out over the city of Paris. One of the city’s other famous landmarks, the Eiffel Tower, stands in the background. “NOTRE-DAME” is inscribed in the upper left.
At the center of the reverse is the name of the series, “GARGOYLES OF THE WORLD,” in an appropriately themed font. One of the creatures is perched upon the “O” in “GARGOYLES.” It is encircled by the types of stained glass windows that appear in Gothic cathedrals, the type of structure on which the figures most frequently appear.
