The Morgan Dollar was originally designed in late 1877 by Assistant Engraver to the Mint, Mr. George T. Morgan. After several sittings with a local model, and refining his design many times, the final version was ready for production in 1878. The obverse of the Morgan Silver Dollar sports a lovely bust portrait of Lady Liberty as she sits facing left. Upon her head rests a Greek stylized cap that has the word “LIBERTY” inscribed into the headband with leaves protruding just from behind the band. The reverse is emblazoned with a bold image of an American eagle with wings outstretched preparing for flight while clutching arrows and branches in his talons.
