Classic Britannia Design by Philip Nathan
Obverse: Recently crowned King Charles III features on the obverse. The left-side portrait by Martin Jennings shows the monarch as calm and reserved. His name and abbreviated Latin title, “CHARLES III D G REX F D,” are inscribed along the rim, as is the coin’s face value, “25 POUNDS.” Martin Jennings is a prolific sculptor.
Reverse: On the reverse is a Britannia design by Philip Nathan that has appeared on numerous coins in this series. The allegorical figure stands on the waves wearing a Corinthian helmet and balancing her shield and trident while holding an olive branch. A rim frame bears inscriptions of her name, “BRITANNIA,” the coin’s date, “2024,” and its weight and purity, “1/4 OZ 999.9 FINE GOLD.” The reverse boasts four security features, including tincture lines on Britannia’s shield, a latent image that changes from a padlock to a trident, and surface animation in the wave-filled background, in addition to micro-text bordering the design that states “DECUS ET TUTAMEN,” which translates to “an ornament and a safeguard.” Philip Nathan studied at the Guildford School of Art and the Royal Academy Schools. He has earned a gold medal from the American Numismatic Association.
