Imagery Memorializing the Late Queen
Obverse: The obverse features the first definitive coinage portrait of His Majesty King Charles III. The monarch is posed facing left, surrounded by the inscriptions “CHARLES III,” “D.G. REX. F.D.,” “5 POUNDS” and “2022.” This newly crafted royal effigy is the work of acclaimed British sculptor Martin Jennings.
Reverse: The reverse is graced with a double effigy of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The renditions represent her long reign depicting both the newly crowned young Queen, and the monarch approximately seventy years later. The field beyond the portraits contains an elegant foliage pattern and the elements of the late Queen’s royal cypher, the inscription “E II R” beneath a stylized crown. Inscriptions include “ELIZABETH REGINA” and her dates of life “1926-2022, along with “ELIZABETH II” and “DEVOTED TO YOUR SERVICE” lettered on the coin’s smooth edge. The memorial design was created by renowned British sculptor John Bergdahl in collaboration with The Royal Mint.
