Striking Britannia Design by Philip Nathan

Obverse: Martin Jennings’s left-side portrait of King Charles III features on the obverse. The recently crowned monarch faces left and is encircled by rim inscriptions. Those inscriptions include his name and abbreviated title, “CHARLES III D G REX F D,” as well as the coin’s face value, “50 POUNDS.” Martin Jennings is famous for his depictions of such famous writers and poets as George Orwell and Charles Dickens.

Reverse: Gracing the reverse is Philip Nathan’s iconic Britannia design. The allegorical figure stands on the waves wearing a Corinthian helmet while balancing her trident and a shield that bears the Union Jack. Inscriptions along the rim identify the coin, “BRITANNIA,” its date, “2024,” and its weight and purity, “1/2 OZ 999.9 FINE GOLD.” The security features on this face include a wave-like pattern that appears throughout the coin’s background, tincture lines that create the Union Flag seen on Britannia’s shield, a holographic security mark that reveals a hidden padlock in place of the trident when rotating the coin, and a laser-etched micro inscription on the coin’s border that reads “DECUS ET TUTAMEN,” meaning “an ornament and safeguard.” Philip Nathan specialized in carving and terracotta modeling at Guildford School of Art and then won the silver medal for sculpture at the Royal Academy School.
