Description
Why purchase this magnificently graded First Releases gilded 2023 Canadian 1 oz. Silver Maple Leaf ultra high relief reverse proof coin?
In 2022, the Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) released the first ever ultra-high relief reverse proof variety of the Silver Maple Leaf coin. Issued annually since 1988, the standard bullion Silver Maple Leaf coin is struck with a relief height of 0.3 mm. Comparatively, the ultra-high relief variant features a relief height of 1.4 mm, which is nearly five times higher! The classic Maple Leaf image is credited to the late Walter Ott (1920-2020), the RCM’s Master Engraver and Director of Art from 1977-1985. Acclaimed medallic artist Susan Taylor, an apprentice to Mr. Ott in the early 1980s, was commissioned to re-sculpt the original maple leaf graphic into an ultra-high relief image. Ms. Taylor served as the RCM’s Senior Engraver from 1999 until her 2017 retirement. This 2023 dated, the second year of the issue of the Ultra High Relief Silver Maple Leaf series has been further augmented from the inaugural release with the addition of selectively gilded accents.

Gorgeous Ultra High Relief Maple Leaf Design
Obverse: The obverse is graced with an elegant, gold-plated, right-facing effigy of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The design, created in 2003, is an example of the work of Canadian portrait artist Susanna Blunt. The likeness of the late monarch is accompanied by the inscriptions “ELIZABETH II,” “20 DOLLARS,” and “2023.” The additional dates “1952” and “2022” are an homage to the Queen’s incredible seventy years as Canada’s sovereign, while the four small dots between the dates are indicative of the four distinct effigies that appeared on Canadian coinage during her reign.
Reverse: A single, remarkably defined gold-plated maple leaf is centered on the reverse. Inscribed “CANADA” and “FINE SILVER 1 OZ. ARGENT PUR,” along with the coin’s “9999” purity flanking the leaf.
