Why Choose This GEM BU 2023 Canada $10 Gold Maple Leaf?

The very first Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coins were struck by the Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) in 1979 and they were quick to become a favorite of many around the world. The Gold Maple Leaf even comes in multiple sizes, so there are options to fit virtually any budget. The RCM struck this specimen for 2023, it has a face value of $10. 2023 is a strange year for the series because of the obverse design and the situation surrounding it. Susanna Blunt’s classic effigy of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II continues to appear on the obverse, but it now includes the dates of the Queen’s reign. This effigy is being used until Buckingham Palace approves an effigy of King Charles III for the RCM. While the Mint has not yet released a statement, it is likely that 2023 will be the final year the Queen appears on the Maple Leaf series. Whether the transition to the effigy of the King will occur later in 2023, or if the transitional obverse will be used for the entire year, remains to be seen.

Unique Obverse for 2023

Obverse: King Charles III has now ascended to the throne, but there have been some holdups with getting his coinage portrait approved by Buckingham Palace outside of Great Britain. The obverse of this coin still shows Susanna Blunt’s portrait of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. 2023 is likely the last time Her Late Majesty will appear on the Gold Maple Leaf, and it’s not known how long this transitional design will be used. For 2023, the dates of Queen Elizabeth II’s rule have been added to the obverse near the left edge of the design, “1952” and “2022.” The coin’s date of issue, “2023,” is next to the face value near the lower edge.

Reverse: This coin’s gold weight and purity are inscribed on the reverse. The central portion features a maple leaf with a breathtaking level of detail. Near the bottom of the leaf’s stem, there is also a small maple leaf security mark that is intended to help deter counterfeiting.
