Description

Why purchase this magnificently graded 1986 American Silver Eagle bullion coin?

The United States Mint introduced the American Silver Eagle series in 1986. The silver dollar coin features imagery celebrating the patriotic themes of liberty, peace, and freedom. The series was officially authorized by the Liberty Coin Act, which was signed into law in July 1985 by President Ronald Reagan. In a recent response to a Freedom of Information Act inquiry, the U.S. Mint revealed that all 1986-dated bullion Silver Eagle coins were struck at the San Francisco Mint.

  • The 1986 dated coin is a product of the San Francisco Mint.
  • The one-dollar denomination coin is legal tender in the United States.
  • The 40.60 mm diameter coin is struck from 1 Troy oz. of .999 fine silver.
  • Mintage of the inaugural release of the bullion Silver Eagle is reported to be 5,393,005 pieces.

Breathtaking Beauty of the American Silver Eagle

Obverse: On the obverse, Lady Liberty is depicted draped in an American flag while walking towards the rising sun. It is inscribed “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “1986.” This time-honored rendition of Liberty first appeared on the 1916 Walking Liberty Half Dollar, designed by acclaimed sculptor Adolph A. Weinman.

Reverse: A heraldic eagle is centered on the reverse, clutching an olive branch and a bundle of arrows. Surrounding inscriptions include “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1 OZ. FINE SILVER,” “ONE DOLLAR” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” This powerful eagle graphic, designed by the U.S. Mint’s 12th Chief Engraver John Mercanti, is the primary defining element of the classic Type-1 variety Silver Eagle issued from 1986 until mid-2021.
