The original Morgan Silver Dollar series was issued annually by the U.S. Mint from 1878 until 1904, then returned for a single year of issue in 1921, during the recovery period following the end of the First World War. The coin’s patriotically themed design is the work of sculptor George T. Morgan, the seventh Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint. The Morgan Dollar series was revived in 2021 as an homage to the centennial anniversary of the vintage series’ conclusion.

Symbolic Morgan Dollar Imagery
Obverse: The obverse features a rendition of Lady Liberty as a young woman wearing a Phrygian cap with “LIBERTY” inscribed on the headband. Sprigs of wheat, cotton, and oak attractively ornament the cap to represent the agricultural advancements of the nation. Thirteen six-pointed stars surround the left-facing portrait, along with the inscription “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and the date of issue “1886.”
Reverse: The reverse illustrates an eagle grasping an olive branch and three arrows, which symbolize peace and the preparedness of the nation’s military to defend that peace. The national motto, ”IN GOD WE TRUST,” is inscribed between the eagle’s outstretched wings above, while a wreath of laurel curves below. Additional inscriptions include “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DOLLAR,” with the San Francisco Mint mark “S” located beneath the wreath’s ribbon.
