The first design change to the coin occurred in 1959, when the wheat foliage image on the reverse was retired and replaced with the façade of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. This 1970 dated coin represents one of two varieties issued by the San Francisco Mint, which differ only in the size of the date.

Obverse: The obverse features a right facing rendition of President Abraham Lincoln. Inscribed “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” “1970” and the San Francisco Mint mark “S.” The portrait is the most prominent work of Lithuanian-born sculptor Victor D. Brenner, who immigrated to the United States in 1890.
Reverse: An image of the Lincoln Memorial is centered on the reverse. Inscriptions include “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “ONE CENT.” The design was crafted by the U.S. Mint’s tenth Chief Engraver, Frank Gasparro.
