Reverse: The reverse features a heraldic eagle grasping an olive branch and a cluster of arrows. Inscribed “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1 OZ. FINE SILVER,” “ONE DOLLAR,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “S.” The patriotic image, which is the identifying characteristic of the Silver Eagle Type-1 variety issued from 1966 until mid-2021, was created by 12th U.S. Mint Chief Engraver John Mercanti.
