Obverse: Lady Liberty walks towards the rising sun on the obverse, with the flag of the U.S. elegantly draped around her form. Portrayed as a young woman, Liberty carries branches of oak and laurel, which are emblematic of longevity, strength, and triumph. Inscriptions include “LIBERTY,” “2008,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.” This interpretation of Liberty first appeared on the 1916 Walking Liberty Half Dollar, designed by renowned early 20th-century sculptor Adolph A. Weinman.
Reverse: The reverse features a heraldic eagle grasping a bundle of arrows and an olive branch, with thirteen stars above. The imagery is the work of currently retired 12th U.S. Mint Chief Engraver John Mercanti and is the primary defining characteristic of the Type-1 style Silver Eagle issued from 1986 until mid-2021. It is inscribed “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1 OZ. FINE SILVER,” “ONE DOLLAR,” the West Point Mint mark “W,” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
