Obverse: Lady Liberty is illustrated on the obverse draped in the folds of an American flag as she walks towards a new day’s sun while carrying a cluster of oak and laurel branches. The obverse is inscribed “LIBERTY,” “2011,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.” The image is a replica of the 1916 Walking Liberty Half Dollar obverse, which was designed by award-winning early 20th-century medallic and architectural sculptor Adolph A. Weinman.
Reverse: The reverse is adorned with a heraldic eagle grasping an olive branch and a bundle of arrows. Designed by 12th U.S. Mint Chief Engraver John Mercanti, this image appeared on all releases of the series from 1986 until mid-2021, and is the main identifying element of the Type-1 style Silver Eagle. Inscribed “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1 OZ. FINE SILVER,” “ONE DOLLAR,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and the West Point Mint mark “W.”
