Striking Ecological Designs
Obverse: Five of the coins in this set share a common obverse design, the coat of arms of South Africa. The fifth, the 1 Rand coin, features the country’s flag. 2023 marks the first time that the country’s flag has ever appeared on any of its circulated coinage. The obverse also bears inscriptions, including the date “2023.” Among the six coins, there are inscriptions in each of the issuing country’s 11 official languages.
Reverse: The reverse designs are all themed on ecology. The 5 Rand coin features the Southern right whale, the 2 rand piece the springbok, South Africa’s national symbol, the 1 Rand coin the king protea, the 50 cent piece Knysna turaco, the 20 cent piece bitter aloe, and the 1 cent piece a honey bee. The respective face value of each coin is inscribed on this face.
