Obverse: Both the obverse and reverse designs come from James Earle Fraser’s Buffalo Nickel. The obverse bears a composite portrait of an elderly Native American man who has feathers tied up at the back of his head. In front of his face is an inscription of the word “LIBERTY,” while the date, “2024,” and last initial of the designer, “F,” are inscribed on his shoulder.
Reverse: The reverse features an imposing design of an American bison. Above and below the beast are the statutory mottoes “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST,” respectively. Along the rim are inscriptions that provide the name of the issuing country, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” and the coin’s metal content, “1 OZ. .9999 FINE GOLD,” while the coin’s face value, “$50,” is noted near the bottom of this face. James Earle Fraser was a prolific sculptor whose work can still be seen at numerous locations throughout Washington, DC.
