The American Gold Eagle’s Powerful Imagery
Obverse: With the rays of a dawning sun behind her, Lady Liberty is portrayed on the obverse with an olive branch of peace and a torch of enlightenment in hand, as she confidently marches forward. The image is accompanied by fifty stars, along with the inscriptions “LIBERTY,” “2021,” and the “ASG” monogram of the artist. The image is borrowed from the 1907 Gold Double Eagle created by renowned sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens.
Reverse: A profile portrait of an alert eagle adorns the reverse, with the inscriptions “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST” above. The image is encircled by the additional inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “25 DOLLARS” and “1/2 OZ. FINE GOLD.” The Type-2 eagle portrait was designed by Jennie Norris, a U.S. Mint Artistic Infusion Program artist since 2019.
