Beautiful Imagery Inspired by the Accomplishments of American Women
Common Obverse: George Washington is portrayed on the obverse in a right facing pose. The inscriptions “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” “2023” and “S” surround the portrait. The image is an example of the work of acclaimed early 20th century sculptor Laura Gardin Fraser. The distinctive rendition of the first U.S. president was originally recommended for the introduction of the 1932 Washington Quarter by the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts.
Reverse: Each of the five coins features a different design dedicated to an American woman. The 2023 releases of the series are adorned with imagery honoring Bessie Coleman (the first female Native American pilot and first African American to earn an international pilot’s license), Edith Kanaka’ole (an indigenous Hawaiian composer who dedicated her life’s work to the preservation of Hawaiian lands and culture), First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt (author and advocate for civil liberties and human rights), Jovita Idar (Mexican American journalist, bi-lingual education advocate and suffragist), and Maria Tallchief (a Native American dancer who is considered to be America’s first major prima ballerina). Inscriptions on each coin include the name of the influential woman, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and the coin’s quarter dollar denomination.
