Striking Inventions and Innovations Designs
Obverse: All four coins in this set share a common obverse design with the other coins in this series. Justin Kunz shows the Statue of Liberty at an angle. She is flanked by inscriptions of the national motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the coin’s face value, “$1.” Justin Kunz is a concept artist, illustrator, and teacher. He has worked for the likes of Blizzard Entertainment and Disney Interactive.
Reverse: The reverse designs celebrate contributions from each of the celebrated states. Ohio’s coin features two hands, one pulling the other up, as a representation of the Underground Railroad. Louisiana’s coin bears a Higgins Boat, which proved vital in landing troops during the Second World War. Indiana’s piece celebrates the state’s important place in automotive history with a classic car and a modern Indy-style race card. The coin for Mississippi features a surgical assistant passing forceps to a surgeon along with a pair of human lungs, which represents the first human lung transplant. Inscriptions on each coin note the state, the name of the issuing country (UNITED STATES OF AMERICA), and, in all but the case of Indiana’s coin, the innovation or invention being celebrated.
