The original Silver Peace Dollar series was introduced by the U.S. Mint in 1921, and issued until 1935. The Mint resurrected the Peace Dollar in 2021 in honor of the centennial anniversary of the series, with a higher metallic purity than the original releases. Due to a shortage of silver blanks necessary to strike the .999 Peace and Morgan series, none were released in 2022, but they are back in 2023! The modern Peace Dollar is minted with the same imagery as the original coin, which was designed by award-winning Italian-American sculptor Anthony de Francisci to symbolize the return of peacetime following the turmoil and devastation of the First World War. This 2023-S Proof Peace Dollar marks the first time a proof finish has been issued in the modern Peace Dollar series and the first time ever the San Francisco Mint has struck a proof Peace Dollar for collectors!

A Stunning Homage to Peace
Obverse: Lady Liberty appears as a young woman on the obverse, in a left-facing pose. Her hair is attractively gathered in a twist at the back of her head, while several loose tendrils are swept away from her face beneath a glorious radiate-style tiara. Inscribed “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST” and “2023.”
Reverse: A majestic bald eagle is illustrated on the reverse grasping an olive branch, standing upon a mountain peak adorned with the word “PEACE.” The eagle is surrounded by stylized rays of the rising sun, along with the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “ONE DOLLAR” and the San Francisco Mint mark “S.”
