The U.S. Mint launched the modern Morgan Silver Dollar series in 2021 to commemorate the centennial anniversary of the original series’ conclusion in 1921. After a year hiatus due to a shortage in silver blanks necessary to strike the coins, in 2023 the United States Mint is again striking .999 fine modern Morgan Dollars. This 2023 dated coin represents the first proof .999 fine Morgan Dollar issued as part of the modern series as well as the first proof Morgan to ever be minted for collectors at the San Francisco Mint. The modern series features the original series’ designs by seventh U.S. Mint Chief Engraver Charles T. Morgan.

Historic Morgan Dollar Design
Obverse: Lady Liberty is rendered on the obverse wearing a Phrygian cap. The cap is embellished with the word “LIBERTY” on the headband, along with sprigs of cotton, wheat and oak. The portrait is framed by the inscription “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” the issue date “2023” and thirteen stars.
Reverse: On the reverse, an eagle is depicted with its wings outstretched while clutching a bundle of arrows and an olive branch, with a laurel wreath curving below. Surrounding inscriptions include “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ONE DOLLAR,” “IN GOD WE TRUST” and the San Francisco Mint’s “S” Mint mark.
