Beautifully Detailed Ship Shilling Design
Obverse: The image of a medieval Dutch warship is centered on the obverse. The mighty vessel is depicted at full sail upon a tranquil sea, with a flag prominently showcased at its stern. The warship is surrounded by the inscription “DEVS. FORTITVDO. ET. SPES. NOSTRA,” which translates as the inspirational proverb “God is our strength and hope.”
Reverse: The reverse is ornamented with the provincial coat of arms of West-Friesland, which consists of two lions passant on a shield, with a jeweled crown above. The inscription “MON. NOV. ORDIN. WEST. FRISIAE.” encircles the emblem as an abbreviation for “Moneta Nova Ordinum Frisiae” (“New silver coin of Friesland”). Additional inscriptions include “6” and “S,” which are representative of the original coin denomination of six stuivers, and the date of issue “2023.”
