Breathtaking Portrayal of Germania
Obverse: On the obverse, Germania is depicted a young woman in an armored gown, just seconds before she thrusts her imperial sword (Reichsschwert) into the earth. Her bicephalous (two-headed) eagle companion is illustrated in the background, preparing to land upon a large stone that is engraved with ancient mystic runes. The two-headed eagle is symbolic of knowledge of the past serving as inspiration for advancement into the future. Inscribed “10 OZ AG 999.9” and “GERMANIA 2023.”
Reverse: The Germania Mint’s double-headed eagle emblem appears on the reverse, bordered by two branches of laurel. Inscribed “GERMANIA” and “50 MARK.” The denomination on the medal is an aesthetic element only. When Germany attained membership in the European Union in 1999, the country adopted the Euro as its official currency, thus retiring the German Mark.
