The Western Black Unicorn, which is associated with freedom, good luck, and prosperity, is horse-like in form, with a single conical horn. As a tribute to the harmony in the contrast between the Eastern and Western Black Unicorns, the medal’s imagery is confined within the shape of the Yin Yang symbol. Obverse: The obverse showcases the distinct shape of the Yin-Yang symbol and boasts a mirrored proof finish. Each half of the symbol features a circular inset adorned with the entrance facade of the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests in the Temple of Heaven in Beijing. The date of issue “2023” appears below each occurrence of the landmark structure.
Reverse: The Yin Yang symbol outline continues on the reverse, with an Eastern Unicorn depicted on one half and a Western Unicorn illustrated on the other. The Eastern Unicorn half is accented with a reverse-proof finish, while the Western Unicorn is accented with a mirrored-proof finish, adding an additional layer of visual contrast between the two interpretations of the majestic mythical creature. Inscribed “AG 999 1 OZ,” with “BLACK UNICORN” in English and Mandarin. The astoundingly detailed unicorn graphics were crafted by award-winning Shanghai Mint coin artist Zhu Xihua.
