For the anniversary release, the original panda mother and cub design of 1983 that was created by acclaimed Chinese artist Yu Min has been transformed into a contemporary high relief masterpiece by one of the leaders in modern numismatic design. The charmingly crafted re-imagined graphic is an example of the work of Chinese artist Tong Fang, the designer of the 2019, 2021 and 2023 Panda series designs. Ms. Tong is also rumored to be the designer of the future 2027 Panda series release. Along with a fine-tuned design, the 2023 40th Anniversary Panda medal features an increased metallic purity and weight from the 1983 coin struck from 27 grams of 90% fine silver.

Obverse: The obverse features a rendition of the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests, a cherished cultural landmark located in the Temple of Heaven complex in Beijing. The medal’s date of issue, “2023,” is inscribed below.
Reverse: On the reverse, a mother panda is depicted seated on a small mound of dirt while enjoying her favorite snack of a bamboo branch. Her young cub appears at her side, playfully digging in the earth. A declaration of the series’ “40th Anniversary” is inscribed beneath the heartwarming scene in Mandarin characters. The medal features a reeded edge that has been engraved by hand with its metallic content, purity and weight as “AG 999 30 G.” The edge lettering did not appear on the 1983 Silver Panda coin, nor did any indication of the coin’s specifications on the obverse or reverse. The modern declaration of the medal’s composition is located on the edge in order to maintain the integrity of the classic design.
