The fifth series of Goldback notes is dedicated to the history of the state of South Dakota. Goldbacks are an exciting form of local voluntary currency that is crafted with physical, one hundred percent recoverable 24 karat gold. The statement of “Specie Legal Tender Instrument,” incorporated into the note’s design, functions as authorization for voluntary use solely in South Dakota. These notes are privately issued and are not U.S. dollar legal tender. The notes are produced from a material called Aurum®, which is innovatively manufactured by applying a precisely measured amount of vaporized gold between two sheets of polyester film. The resulting note is amazingly durable and features a sensational high-resolution colorized image.

Gorgeously Rendered Imagery Celebrating Peace
Obverse: The obverse is an homage to the virtue of Peace. Pax (Latin word for peace) is allegorically represented as a young Native American woman of the Lakota Nation. The woman performs a hoop dance while wearing ceremonial regalia that is traditionally handmade and embroidered with symbols representing the wearer’s name, tribe, heritage, family legends, and personal achievements. A banner below bears the inscription “ALLIANCE OF FRIENDS,” which is the modernized evolution of “The Friendly Ones,” the meaning of the word “Lakota” in the native language. The Lakota woman is accompanied by an American bison and a bald eagle, the national animal and bird of the United States, along with a coyote and an American pasque blossom, the official South Dakota state animal and flower. The scene is captioned “SEEK PEACE” below. The powerful image is accompanied by additional inscriptions that include “2023,” “SOUTH DAKOTA GOLDBACK,” “SPECIE LEGAL TENDER INSTRUMENT,” “1/1000 TROY OUNCE 24K GOLD” and “ONE.”
Reverse: The inherent beauty and elegance of natural gold is showcased on the reverse. Instead of a dedicated image, the note’s innovative minting technique produces a lightly frosted mirror image of the obverse design.
