An Homage to the Prestigious Purple Heart
Obverse: Five stars curve beside a beautiful interpretation of the revered Purple Heart Medal on the obverse. Each star is symbolic of one of the five individual branches of the U.S. military. The inscriptions “COMBAT WOUNDED & KILLED IN ACTION,” “LIBERTY,” “1932,” “2022” and “IN GOD WE TRUST” surround the medal.
Reverse: A female nurse, one of more than 23,000 that served in the U.S. Army and Navy during the First World War, is depicted on the reverse tending the injuries of a wounded soldier on a stretcher. Curving above the image are the inscriptions “UNITED STATES of AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “ONE DOLLAR.” The coin’s obverse and reverse designs feature the work of sculptor Heidi Wastweet, the former Chief Engraver of the Sunshine Mint and current member of the U.S. Mint’s Artistic Infusion Program.
