Featuring the Exquisite Eagle Design of Jennie Norris
Obverse: Liberty stands confidently at the center of the obverse facing the holder as she holds her torch and an olive branch against a backdrop of the morning sun. The image, widely considered the most beautiful in the history of American numismatics, comes from the Double Eagle of Augustus Saint-Gaudens. The central figure’s name, “LIBERTY,” is inscribed on this face, as is the date, “2022.” The U.S. Mint brought the obverse design more in line with the details and vision of the man who created it, Augustus Saint-Gaudens. By making use of its historical assets, the institution made the stunning design more true to its origin. Augustus Saint-Gaudens was an immigrant from Ireland who was a prominent sculptor in America. Besides making this and other numismatic contributions, he also fostered an environment that catered to artists by founding the Cornish colony.
Reverse: The reverse bears a detailed profile of a bald eagle that was designed by Jennie Norris and sculpted by Renata Gordon. At the top of the design are a pair of statutory mottoes, “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.” “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “50 DOLLARS,” and “1 OZ. FINE GOLD” are inscribed along the rim. Jennie Norris has won awards for fine art. This design was the first of hers to appear on an American coin.
