Exquisite Designs by Adolph Weinman and John Mercanti
Obverse: On the obverse is the famous Walking Liberty design of Adolph Weinman, which originally appeared on the Half Dollar from 1916-1947. Liberty is draped in the American flag as she carries laurel and oak branches, symbols of civilian and military honors, respectively, against a backdrop of the rising sun. The figure’s name, “LIBERTY,” joins the national motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the date, “2021,” among the obverse inscriptions. Adolph Weinman designed the Walking Liberty Half Dollar and the Mercury Dime, two crucially important coins in America’s early 20th century numismatic history. He was also a sculptor, whose work can still be seen in numerous American cities.
Reverse: The reverse design was created by John Mercanti. Modeled off of the Great Seal of the United States, it features an eagle protecting a union shield under stars that represent the original states. Rim inscriptions provide essential information about the coin, reading, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1 OZ. FINE SILVER,” and “ONE DOLLAR.” John Mercanti is one of the best known figures in American numismatic history. He spent part of nearly four decades with the U.S. Mint as the institution’s Chief Engraver. He has designed more medals and coins than any other person in the institution’s history.
