Featuring the Exquisite Heraldic Eagle Design of John Mercanti
Obverse: The coin’s obverse bears Adolph Weinman’s Walking Liberty design. Liberty carries oak and laurel branches, which represent military and civilian honors, respectively, as she walks confidently in the morning sun. Her name, “LIBERTY,” spreads throughout the top half of the rim, while the coin’s date, “2021,” and the national motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST,” are also inscribed on this face. Adolph Weinman is best known for designing the Walking Liberty Half Dollar and the Mercury Dime. His other artistic contributions include numerous sculptures, some of which are still displayed prominently in a number of American cities.
Reverse: For the final time John Mercanti’s Heraldic Eagle design appears on the reverse. Based on the Great Seal of the United States, the image consists of an eagle protection a union shield and thirteen stars, which symbolize the original states. These images are encircled by the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1 OZ. FINE SILVER,” and “ONE DOLLAR.” John Mercanti spent nearly four decades with the US Mint, including time as its twelfth Chief Engraver. Over the course of his career, he became the most prolific coin and medal designer in American history.
