Classic Heraldic Eagle Design by John Mercanti
Obverse: Adolph Weinman’s iconic Walking Liberty design graces the obverse. Draped in the American flag and wearing a Phrygian cap, Liberty carries laurel and oak branches as the morning sun begins to rise. Inscriptions on this face include her name, “LIBERTY,” the date, “2021,” and the national motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST.” Adolph Weinman played a vital role in the early 20th century American numismatic renaissance. His two best known contributions to the effort were the Mercury Dime and the Walking Liberty Half Dollar.
Reverse: John Mercanti’s heraldic eagle design, which is based on the Great Seal of the United States, features on the reverse for the final time. Thirteen stars shine above an eagle, which protects a union shield while holding arrows and an olive branch. The design is encircled by rim inscriptions that provide the name of the issuing country, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” the coin’s metal content, “1 OZ. FINE SILVER,” and its face value, “ONE DOLLAR.” John Mercanti spent thirty-seven years with the US Mint, including time as its Chief Engraver. He is the most prolific coin and medal designer in American history.
