Iconic World Coinage Imagery
The 1 oz. Type-1 American Silver Eagle one dollar coin obverse is graced with the timeless rendition of Lady Liberty wrapped in an American flag, which first appeared on the 1916 Walking Liberty Half Dollar designed by acclaimed sculptor Adolph A. Weinman. The coin represents the final release of the series to feature the Type-1 Heraldic Eagle reverse image created by the U.S. Mint’s 12th Chief Engraver, John Mercanti. The silver Eagle has been a product of the U.S. Mint since 1986. The second American Silver Eagle example in the set represents the inaugural release of the Type-2 design. The obverse personification of Liberty remains unchanged, while the reverse features a newly designed, lifelike interpretation of an eagle preparing to land, designed by award-winning science and nature illustrator Emily Damstra, a member of the U.S. Mint’s Artistic Infusion Program. The Type-2 design includes the introduction of innovative security measures to the Silver Eagle series, such as a reeded edge variation. The Chinese Panda 10 Yuan coin contains 30 grams of silver and features a single year issue panda design. The obverse depicts Beijing’s Temple of Heaven, an image common to all releases of the panda series, while the reverse scene exemplifies motherly devotion, as a mother panda lovingly guides her cub’s playful journey up a tree. The China Mint launched the Silver Panda series in 1983. The Canadian Maple Leaf five dollar coin, struck from 1 oz. of silver, features a rendition of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse that has appeared on the series since 2004, with Canada’s national sugar maple leaf symbol on the reverse. The Silver Maple Leaf has been annually released by the Royal Canadian Mint since 1988. The 1 Rand, 1 oz. Krugerrand of South Africa is adorned with a portrait of former South African President Paul Kruger on the obverse, while the national animal, a springbok antelope, gracefully leaps across the foliage of the savanna on the reverse. The South African Mint introduced the Silver Krugerrand series in 2017, as a tribute to the 50th Anniversary of the Gold Krugerrand series.
