Why buy this Type I 2021-(P) American Silver Eagle Emergency Production Struck at the Philadelphia Mint?

To mitigate pandemic-related production delays and to keep up with customer demand, the U.S. Mint decided to partially bridge this gap by authorizing a production run of bullion Silver Eagles at the Philadelphia Mint. This coin was among the 495,000 pieces struck as part of that run. It is also one of the final bullion issues of the Silver Eagle to bear John Mercanti’s heraldic eagle reverse design, which will be replaced at some point during 2021.

Patriotic Heraldic Eagle Design by John Mercanti

Obverse: The coin’s obverse bears Adolph Weinman’s iconic Walking Liberty design. The morning sun emerges from beyond the horizon while Liberty, the picture of patriotism as she is draped in the American flag, carries laurel and oak branches in the foreground. Her name, “LIBERTY,” is inscribed on this face, as are the date, “2021,” and the national motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST.” Adolph Weinman is best known for his two biggest contributions to America’s early 20th century numismatic renaissance, the Walking Liberty Half Dollar and the Mercury Dime. In addition to his numismatic efforts, he was also a sculptor, and many pieces that he created continue to be displayed in American cities today.

Reverse: A heraldic eagle protects a union shield under thirteen stars on the reverse. John Mercanti used the Great Seal of the United States as the model for the design. Inscriptions along the rim read, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1 OZ. FINE SILVER,” and “ONE DOLLAR.” John Mercanti is the most prolific coin and medal designer in American history. He was formerly the twelfth Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint, an institution with which he spent nearly four decades.
