Featuring for the Final Time John Mercanti’s Heraldic Eagle Design

Obverse: One of the most beloved designs in American history, Adolph Weinman’s Walking Liberty, features on the obverse. The morning sun emerges from beyond the horizon as Liberty, draped in the American flag, carries laurel and oak branches. Inscriptions on this face include the figure’s name, “LIBERTY,” the national motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the date, “2021.” Adolph Weinman designed the Walking Liberty Half Dollar and the Mercury Dime, as well as other pieces for the US Mint. In addition to his numismatic contributions, he was also a sculptor, and his work remains on display in numerous American cities.

Reverse: A heraldic eagle protects a union shield while holding arrows and an olive branch under thirteen stars on the reverse. John Mercanti used the Great Seal of the United States as his model for the design. Encircling the image along the rim are the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1 OZ. FINE SILVER,” and “ONE DOLLAR. john Mercanti was the twelfth Chief Engraver of the US Mint. He has designed more medals and coins than anyone else in American history.

Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) provided this coin’s grading information on an exclusive Eagle label. NGC graded the coin Mint State 70, the company’s highest, which means that it appears perfect even under 5x magnification. NGC also certified this piece First Day of Issue, a designation given only to coins that were submitted for grading through an exclusive process. The certification labels also bear both the “Emergency Production Pedigree” and “Struck at the Philadelphia Mint” designation.
