Description

Why order this Philadelphia Mint Emergency Production 2021-(P) Type I American Silver Eagle?

The American Silver Eagle marks its 35th anniversary in 2021. To keep up with demand and offset production delays during the covid-19 pandemic, the U.S. Mint authorized a production run of bullion Silver Eagles at the Philadelphia Mint. This coin comes from that run production, which makes it a fantastic keepsake from these interesting times. This Type I Silver Eagle is also one of the last to bear John Mercanti’s original heraldic eagle reverse design, which is set to change mid-year.

  • This coin is $1 U.S. legal tender.
  • The Silver Eagle is one the world’s most popular bullion coins.
  • This piece comes from the 35th anniversary issue.
  • This is one of the final bullion issues to bear the heraldic eagle reverse design of John Mercanti, dubbed the Type-1 or T-1 design.
  • This coin was struck from 1 oz of .999 fine silver.
  • This piece was part of an authorized production run of 495,000 Silver Eagles at the Philadelphia Mint.
  • Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) graded this coin Mint State 70.
  • NGC provided the grading information on a brown label.

Featuring for the Final Time John Mercanti’s Heraldic Eagle Design

Obverse: The coin’s obverse bears the iconic Walking Liberty design of Adolph Weinman. Weinman’s design comes from his Walking Liberty Half Dollar. It shows Liberty carrying laurel and oak branches as the morning sun emerges from beyond the horizon. The obverse inscriptions read, “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “2021.” Adolph Weinman designed the Walking Liberty Half Dollar and the Mercury Dime, two of the most beloved coins in American history. Weinman also sculpted numerous works, many of which remain on display in cities across America.

Reverse: John Mercanti’s original reverse design features a heraldic eagle protecting a union shield under thirteen stars. The eagle holds arrows and an olive branch. Inscriptions along the rim read, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1 OZ. FINE SILVER,” and “ONE DOLLAR.” John Mercanti spent over three and a half decades with the U.S. Mint, including time as its Chief Engraver. During his career, he designed more coins and medals than anyone else in the institution’s history.
