Design Celebrating the Determination of the Tuskegee Airmen
Obverse: George Washington is depicted on the obverse, as designed by acclaimed American sculptor John Flanagan for the introduction of the Washington Quarter in 1932. Inscribed “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” “QUARTER DOLLAR” and the “P” Mint mark of Philadelphia.
Reverse: The reverse illustrates a pilot securing his flight suit while observing two P-51 Mustang type planes in the air above the Moton Field control tower. The image is accompanied by the inscriptions “TUSKEGEE AIRMEN,” “ALABAMA,” “2021” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” with the phrase “THEY FOUGHT TWO WARS” above the image, referencing the Airmen’s participation in the fight against fascism overseas, as well as the battle with discrimination at home.
