Featuring for the Final Time John Mercanti’s Patriotic Reverse Design
Obverse: The coin’s obverse design comes from Adolph Weinman’s Walking Liberty Half Dollar. Liberty extends her right hand to greet the new day while carrying laurel and oak branches in her left arm. Her name, “LIBERTY,” is inscribed along the rim at the top, while the national motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the date, “2021,” are included elsewhere on this face. Adolph Weinman is most famous for designing the Mercury Dime and the Walking Liberty Half Dollar. His other artistic work includes sculptures that can be seen in many American cities to this day.
Reverse: On the reverse is an adaptation of the Great Seal of the United States that John Mercanti designed specifically for this series. Thirteen stars are arranged in a triangular formation above an eagle, which protects a union shield. The design is encircled by rim inscriptions that note the name of the issuing country, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” the coin’s weight, “1 OZ. FINE SILVER,” and its face value, “ONE DOLLAR.” John Mercanti spent over three and a half decades with the US Mint, including time as its Chief Engraver. He is the most prolific designer of coins and medals in American history.
