Featuring John Mercanti’s Heraldic Eagle Design
Obverse: The coin’s obverse design comes from Adolph Weinman’s Walking Liberty Half Dollar. Liberty is draped in the American flag as she carries laurel and oak branches against a backdrop of the rising sun. Her name, “LIBERTY,” is inscribed on this face, as are the national motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the date, “2021.” Adolph Weinman contributed two of the best known coins to America’s early 20th century numismatic renaissance, the Walking Liberty Half Dollar and the Mercury Dime. He also designed several sculptures, some of which can still be seen in cities across America.
Reverse: The reverse design was adapted from the Great Seal of the United States by John Mercanti. An eagle protects a union shield under thirteen stars, which symbolize the original states. Inscriptions along the rim read, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1 OZ FINE SILVER,” and “ONE DOLLAR.” John Mercanti spent nearly four decades with the US Mint, including times as the institution’s Chief Engraver. He has designed more coins and medals than any other American in history.
