Featuring the Patriotic Designs of Adolph Weinman and John Mercanti
Obverse: Liberty carries laurel and oak branches as she strides confidently with the morning sun emerging from beyond the horizon. Designed by Adolph Weinman, the image first appeared on the Half Dollar from 1916-1947. Inscriptions on this face include the figure’s name, “LIBERTY,” the national motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the date, “2021.” Adolph Weinman designed two of the best known coins in American history, the Walking Liberty Half Dollar and the Mercury Dime. He was also a prominent sculptor, whose work can still be seen on display in many American cities.
Reverse: On the reverse, an eagle protects a union shield beneath thirteen stars. John Mercanti adapted the image from the Great Seal of the United States. The design is encircled by three rim inscriptions, which note the name of the issuing country, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” the coin’s weight, “1 OZ. FINE SILVER,” and its face value, “ONE DOLLAR.” John Mercanti was the twelfth Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. He held the post for part of his nearly four decades with the institution, during which he designed more coins and medals than anyone else in American history.
