Featuring Legendary Designs by Adolph Weinman and John Mercanti
Obverse: The coin’s obverse design was originally created by Adolph Weinman for the Walking Liberty Half Dollar. Liberty strides confidently with laurel and oak branches in her arm as the morning sun rises to the left. Inscriptions on this face include her name, “LIBERTY,” the national motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the date, “2021.” Adolph Weinman contributed two of the best-known coins in American history, the Walking Liberty Half Dollar and the Mercury Dime. He also sculpted numerous works, some of which continue to be displayed in cities throughout the United States.
Reverse: John Mercanti’s reverse design consists of thirteen stars, symbols of the original states, and an eagle that protects a union shield. Mercanti modeled the image after the Great Seal of the United States. “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” arches over the image, while inscriptions on the bottom half of the rim note the coin’s weight, “1 OZ. FINE SILVER,” and face value, “ONE DOLLAR.” John Mercanti spent nearly four decades with the U.S. Mint, part of which he spent as his Chief Engraver. He is the most prolific designer of coins and medals in U.S. Mint history.
