The coin was graded by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) at the lofty Mint State 70 (MS70) level and qualified for the First Day of Issue (FDI) designation. It was struck at the West Point branch of the U.S. Mint. It contains .242 oz. of gold struck on a 90% fine gold planchet.

The obverse image shows three people in the epic struggle of playing basketball. The arms have been enhanced to emphasize the struggle of playing the game. The images have been artistically interpreted to emphasize physical exertion. The obverse was sculpted by Michael Gaudioso of the U.S. Mint and designed by Justin Kunz of the Artistic Infusion Program. The reverse shows a basketball passing through the rim. The reverse was sculpted by Phebe Hemphill of the U.S. Mint and designed by Donna Weaver of the Artistic Infusion Program.
