Obverse: Lady Liberty is portrayed on the obverse elegantly draped in an American flag. She carries a bundle of oak and laurel branches, which are emblematic of strength, honor and victory. Inscribed “LIBERTY,” “2020” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.” This personification of Liberty first appeared on the 1916 Walking Liberty Half Dollar designed by Adolph A. Weinman, an acclaimed medallic sculptor of the early 20th century.
Reverse: An eagle grasping arrows and an olive branch is featured on the reverse. The heraldic eagle image, created by 12th U.S. Mint Chief Engraver John Mercanti, is the defining design element of the Type-1 Silver Eagle issued from 1986 until mid-2021. Inscribed “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1 OZ. FINE SILVER,” “ONE DOLLAR” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
